Ahh, this is called a drink pick, a cocktail pick, or more specifically, a sword pick. Its main function is not to be a toothpick, though I'll bet most people have used one as such. It's closer to being a food skewer, in that it's only designed to stab food (drink fruit garnish), and not so much the chewed kind that gets stuck in your teeth. So there you have it; it's a fancy way to keep garnishes from getting lost at sea, but it arguably makes a fabulous toothpick in a pinch. Quite ironic if you happen to get a piece of previously skewered pineapple stuck in your teeth.

It's a teeny little sword that belongs to a teeny little ninja.

It's a food skewer. I've gotten drinks with them stuck through cherries and such. Definitely a food skewer. They're not sturdy enough to be a toothpick.

The cocktail sword. If it's not immersed in at least a 20% alcohol solution, it can be used to righteously poke whoever watered down your drink.

It is definitely a cocktail pick. Often accompanied by a lovely mini mermaid hanging from your glass. Although I preference is for pink flamingo picks. In my large collection of cocktail stirrers, picks etc. my favorite is the Menehune from Trader Vic's at the Plaza in NYC. (I'm not kidding, I actually have an amazing amount of these silly things). The menehune was an amazing drink that they claimed many who drank it were said to see little men running around. So they gave you menehune to bring home. It was a plastic little Polynesian person wearing a grass skirt on a wooden stick. I've given most of mine away but still have a few. My favorite straw though is the pink flamingo straw with the tissue paper body that unfolds and wraps around the straw forming the body. Hey, maybe I should write book about cocktail items! Would you buy it?

Cocktail pick. They hurt like ((*&$#(*&$ to be a toothpick

If you want a REALLY good toothpick, use your Swiss Army knife scissor to cut a drinking straw at an angle to make a point. Good reach, and easy to find the materials to make one. You do have a Swiss Army knife with a scissors in your pocket, don't you? You see, that would make you a gentleman. The reason you and your wife are having this discussion is that you used this cocktail pick as a tooth pick, which in her eyes made you a brute. Using the advanced tool I've described while in the men's room or otherwise discretely located will win you big points and a great night of romance.

Too large at the end to be a toothpick. Of course, I guess some people may have a gap in their teeth... :S
