judging by the color, I would say the contractor is correct.

take a nail over to your local hardware store and ask an employee there to verify.

Those look to be hot dipped to me, could be electro galvanized, definitely galvies.

well because of the shape and color, i would have to say they are definately some sort of nails.

Why is he using nails? He should be using screws!!!

Those nails are fine. As long as they were used for the framing. If they were used for the decking it would have been better to be ring shanked.

Those look like electro-galvanized, but if the are being used in a deck they should be stainless or they will cause black stains after being in the weather

These two are defective, the heads are on the wrong end! Austrailian possibly.

WEDAFT is correct...Why isn't he using screws?

They looked hot dipped. I agree with using screws. Torx screws. They don't strip out like the phillips. Predrill the ends when using wood so they don't crack out as the head sets. It is good to suck the deck boards down, but don't drive the screws to deep. Water and ice can work their magic on your material in those holes over time. I find all fasteners discolor except stainless if you want to pay the $ for them.
