Tags: flying insect bird Rocky Mountain National Park Description:(THIS QUESTION HAS BEEN ANSWERED. THANK YOU!) I took this picture at Rocky Mountain National Park in 2007. I didn't notice the strange flying thing when I took the picture. I've included the original photo (please click to see it at a larger size) plus a zoomed-in crop of the object in question. It looks a lot like a dragonfly, but when you look at it in the perspective of the whole scene, you can see it's much too large. No dragonfly would look that big from such a distance. It sure doesn't look like a bird to me. Any ideas? Comments:

Watching your photography, I remarked that the focus was on background (5 meters to infinity). The far landscape and the pine-tree branches are neat, but the foreground rocks are blurred. As your “UFO” is blurred, it is in the foreground. Not between the pine-tree branches or behind them, but really closer than the value contrast makes believe. So this UFO is between you and the pine-tree, 1 to 5 meters of your camera, and is big because close! Closer than you think. For me that "UFO” is then a 5 to 7 cm dragonfly, quite a normal size.
A somewhat similar effect can be seen on this photo, where flying birds are some in focus, some out of focus, further or nearer

Rather silly of me not to think of that. It certainly does fool the eye into thinking that the "object" is near the tree. Thanks for the feedback.

It looks like a dragonfly to me--probably zipped past while you took the picture.
